Review– i-SENSYS MF628Cw is created for small or home office use. It can printing, copy and scan in full colour, as well as handle the mailing and getting of fax, covering most document-based needs in many small office buildings. This is a substantive printer, the size of a desktop photocopier from the 1980s/1990s. The only paper tray – there is an supplementary, single-sheet feed – has a capacity of 150-sheets, but there’s no option to add an extra dish. As an all-in-one planned for a little office, this is a very perplexing omission.

It implies that at the very least it means you will need to restock the tray way too frequently and at worst, you’ll consistently run out of newspaper part-way through print and copy jobs. Canon rates the i-SENSYS MF628Cw at 14ppm in both black and white and colour, but in our tests we failed to see these rates of speed. Our 5-page black textual content test returned 7. 3ppm, although this rose to 10. 7ppm on the 20-page, long document – still some way brief of spec. The 5-page text and colour design document gave 6. 3ppm, less than half the rated speed.

Our studies are timed from the moment we click “Print” to the last web page arriving in the outcome tray, and therefore include processing time – the ISO tests quoted by manufacturer’s don’t take this in account. With laser beam machines, however, we do print a waste webpage before each job, so the printer doesn’t have to wait for the fuser to warm up.

A single-page colour backup from the flatbed required 21 seconds and a 5-page mono copy from the ADF took thirty eight seconds, both very fair times. 15 x 10cm image prints took between 21 seconds and twenty seven seconds, depending on source.

The quality of black color text is excellent; clean and densely black. This kind of applies to black floods as well. Colour end result is vivid, without hint of dither patterns. Right now there is some slight haloing of black text over blue and green floods, and the colour duplicate produced some patchy fill up colours, but nothing too extreme.

Photo prints were varied. Our standard test sample looked over-vivid and a little picture-postcard, with colours lost in darkness. Other prints were more nuanced, however – although we did notice some vertical banding in images taken from an Google android smartphone.
